With over 31 years of experience in health systems, health markets, and healthcare financing, Dr. Nelson Gitonga is the founder, CEO and Lead Expert at Insight Health Advisors Ltd (IHA), a position held since January 2009. Under this role, he has led and provided strategic and technical expertise for numerous high-impact health projects, focusing on health systems and health markets assessments and development, demand-side healthcare financing mechanisms, service delivery systems modelling strengthening public-private sector engagement and partnerships and promoting public sector scaling of demand driven healthcare innovations. His work spans across multiple African countries, including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Bangladesh, where he has collaborated with ministries of health and global organizations like DANIDA, USAID, the World Bank, and Grand Challenges Canada to foster effective health system improvements and innovations.

 

As a senior advisor and team lead in various projects, Dr. Gitonga has demonstrated exceptional leadership in designing and implementing health systems and market interventions to achieve UHC, and in developing the much-needed healthcare leaders and managers. He is a recognized expert in bringing together various public, private and development agencies to jointly tackle pressing health challenges through partnership and collaboration approaches and platforms.

 

Dr. Gitonga holds an MBChB from the University of Nairobi, postgraduate diplomas in health systems management from the University of London, Galilee International Management Institute in Israel, and National Insurance Academy in India. He is an alumnus of the Strathmore University Business School/IESE Business School AMP program.
